Keeping the Blade: Brewing in the Age of Legends

March 28, 2021

Kaldheim Season, Episode 21: Hero's Blade, Vorinclex, Dream Devourer, Egon, God of Death

While Strixhaven previews are roaring, we're still a few weeks away from actually getting to play with these cards. But that's fine because we still have plenty of unfinished business with Kaldheim. In this "last call" episode, we tackle a potpourri of interesting cards that didn't manage to land starring roles in their own dedicated weeks.

Hero's Blade has quietly become a card to watch as we enter the Age of Commander, where each set has 20+ new legendary creatures (Kaldheim had a whopping 33!) at all spots on the mana curve. Vorinclex has proven itself in Green devotion but might also function in a nontraditional ramp shell. Egon and Dream Devourer haven't made a big splash yet, but each bring unique skill sets to the table. Which of them can give Kaldheim a proper send-off with one last 5-0?

Bad Teacher: Professor Onyx, Kasmina, and Urza PyreBlade

March 26, 2021

Kaldheim Season, Episode 20: This Week in Brewing (March 26, 2021)

Two new Strixhaven planeswalkers dropped early this week, and boy are they weird. Kasmina asks us to solve interesting puzzles, while Liliana — excuse me, Professor Onyx — seems to want us to play multiplayer. Don't throw out your Chain of Smogs just yet!

With MTGO decklists being published again, we also have some spicy Picks of the Week from the Modern leagues, and hard won lessons on the Flashback about how to Birthing Pod in 2021. Tune in on Sunday for our final Brew Session of Kaldheim Season!

Pyre of Heroes: Lessons from Birthing Pod

Pyre of Heroes: Lessons from Birthing Pod

March 21, 2021

Kaldheim Season, Episode 19: Pyre of Heroes

Long ago, Birthing Pod was the crown jewel of Modern. It was fast, resilient, and capable of playing fair or unfair as needed. The namesake artifact was ultimately banned outright; never shall we see its like again.

Unless.... could Pyre of Heroes really be the second coming of Pod? Wizards certainly wants us to think so. The effect is so similar, and Pyre is even more generous in certain respects. The catch? That pesky clause that says you must find a creature of the same type. This card is one for the brewers, that's for sure, so let's get to work!

The Invasion of the Giants

The Invasion of the Giants

March 14, 2021

Kaldheim Season, Episode 17: Giants Week

Fire giants. Ice giants. Even a few creatures pretending to be giants. Kaldheim has no shortage of Giants, but none on the level of Bonecrusher Giant or the Theros titans. Instead, we got some intriguing supporting tools: Invasion of the Giants, Glimpse the Cosmos, and a few other utility creatures. Are any of these equal to the challenge in Modern and Pioneer? Let's find out!

The Case for Sylvan Caryatid

The Case for Sylvan Caryatid

March 12, 2021

Kaldheim Season, Episode 16: This Week in Brewing (March 12, 2021)

Is Niv-Mizzet the best deck again in Modern? Is Sylvan Caryatid the most powerful card in Pioneer? And can you go infinite with Ugin's Nexus, or is six turns in a row good enough?

Meanwhile on the Flashback, we tested four new builds with Esika's Chariot, notching a slick 5-0 in Modern and some encouraging results in Pioneer. Is this the new face of Cat Combo?

Chariots of Fur: Esika’s Chariot and the New Cat Combo

Chariots of Fur: Esika’s Chariot and the New Cat Combo

March 7, 2021

Kaldheim Season, Episode 15: Esika's Chariot

The cat's out of the bag on Esika's Chariot. The green Kitty Wagon is already making waves in Pioneer thanks to its purrrfect synergy with Transmogrify strategies as well as Naya Winota. But that's just the tip of the whiskers for this magical Cat-illac. The card is already outstanding value by itself, but with the aid of a certain cat-loving planeswalker, Chariot has the potential to be something really special. One cat just leads to another, so lets see what this chariot can do!

The Clock Strikes Midnight: Time Spiral Remastered and Our Worst Results Ever

The Clock Strikes Midnight: Time Spiral Remastered and Our Worst Results Ever

March 5, 2021

Kaldheim Season, Episode 14: Post-B&R Week 2 Roundup

In last week's Brew Session we vowed to go In Search of Greatness, at any cost. One week later, as we tally up said costs, the result is a big yikes. Our pursuit of Greatness resulted in a truly MASSIVE losing streak, the likes of which our podcast has never seen. Was it just bad luck? Or is this Search for Greatness doomed to be a "Fail to Find"?

Meanwhile, in the category of things that don't suck, Time Spiral Remastered is looking great, and the innovations continue apace in both Modern and Pioneer. We take a look at spicy new builds with Birgi, God of Storytelling, plus Picks of the Week featuring Midnight Clock, Storm Herald, and several new Elves from Kaldheim.
